The traditional story of how Council Bluffs was named dates back to when the Lewis and Clark Expedition passed through the area in 1804. On that occasion, Lewis and Clark met in council with Native Americans near the bluffs on the Missouri River and the area was so named. During the years the Saints were here, they changed the name of the city to Kanesville in honor of Col. Thomas L. Kane. After the Saints had gone west, local citizens changed the name back to Council Bluffs. Located up on the bluffs, the marker seen here commemorates these historical details.
