This view shows the frozen North Platte River at Fort Caspar in Casper, Wyoming. It was near this site that Latter-day Saint pioneers ferried across the North Platte for the last time. Some of the Saints stayed back to operate the ferry they had constructed as a source of badly needed revenue. Travelers who could not afford the cost of the ferry usually crossed at Bessemer Bend, some six miles away.
