Early in 1828, Jospeh and Emma moved into a small, two-story frame home about six hundred feet east of Isaac Hale's residence (Emma's birthplace) in Harmony Township (now Oakland), Pennsylvania. The home had been previously owned and occupied by Isaac's eldest son, Jesser, and his family.
On April 6, 1829, Jospeh signed an indenture to purchase the home and thirteen acres and eighty perches (about one half acre) of farm land from his father-in-law for $200. He completed his payments on August 26, 1830. The property was sold by the Prophet for $300 to Joseph McKune, Jr., a brother-in-law, on June 28, 1833. The McKune family cemetary, located on the property, contains the graves of Isaac and Elizabeth Hale; a daughter of Jesse and Mary Hale; and Alva, a son of Joseph and Emma Smith.
