in
Burmingham
,
Wareckshire
[sic
Birmingham
,
Warwickshire]
,
England
to
John
Williams
and
Ann
Walton
Townsend
.
John
was a
wood-turner
by
trade
, and
made
all
kinds
of
furniture
and
toys
. The
family
was
very
poor
,
so
Emma
was not
able
to
attend
school
, but
cared
for her
younger
siblings
.
Emma
joined
the
Church
of
Jesus
Christ
of
Latter-day
Saints
along
with the
rest
of her
family
and they
left
England
of
March
9
,
1860
to
sail
for
America
. The
seas
were
stormy
, but
after
seven
weeks
the
ship
finally
landed
in
Castle
Garden
,
New
York
. They then
traveled
five
days
to
St
.
Joseph
, and on to
Winter
Quarters
with the
Daniel
Robinson
Company
.
Emma's
grandparents
,
who
were
already
in
Utah
,
met
the
company
in
Emigration
Canyon
and
helped
them into
Salt
Lake
City
. They
arrived
August
27
,
1860
, but had
no
home
or
place
to
stay
.
Emma
worked
like
a
grown
man
,
helping
to
keep
her
family
going
. On
February
13
,
1867
Emma
married
Henry
Lovesy
and they
settled
in
Salt
Lake
City
.
Emma
and
Henry
had
five
daughters
,
two
of
whom
survived
into
adulthood
.
Sometime
later
,
Emma's
family
apostatized
,
joining
the
Josephite
Church
.
After
Emma's
father
died
, her
mother
came
back
to
live
with
Emma
, and
rejoined
the
Church
.
Emma
passed
away
December
3
,
1932
at
age
84
.
Abstract
This
autobiography
is
four
pages
long
,
typewritten
.
Emma
told
her
life
story
to
Virginia
Schwagler
who
acted
as
scribe
.
Emma
worked
hard
her
entire
life
, and
never
had
many
earthly
possessions
.
When
she was
sailing
to
America
, she was
nearly
swept
overboard
by a
huge
wave
.
While
traveling
to
Utah
,
12-year-old
Emma
went
barefoot
the
whole
way
, and had to
either
pull
the
heavy
handcart
or
carry
the
baby
. The
company
met
friendly
Indians
along
the
way
, and
traded
with them for
supplies
.
When
they
finally
reached
Utah
,
Emma
gathered
bark
up
the
canyon
to
trade
for
bits
of
soap
at the
soap
factory
.
Emma
never
had any
kind
of
education
or
chance
to
learn
to
read
and
write
, but in her
last
12
years
of
life
was
miraculously
blessed
with the
ability
to
read
her
scriptures
, and then
anything
else
.
