Notes	"Yesterday I saw a perfectly, wonderfully beautiful woman, the only one I ever saw in my life. She was a Russian. I was so moved by her grace and beauty that I cannot remember just what she looked like. But I shall go again to see her and then, perhaps, I may dare attempt description. Somehow I felt better, happier, greater for having looked upon her. I wonder why beauty has such power over me. That woman was infinite delight in every line, gesture, look, feature. She was inspiration. She made me silent. She made me thrill. I think greatly beauty is essentially pure in its effect." [April 12, 1912] "Today I went to see her again. She was regally tall, a slender woman of perfect form, hair a golden brown, eyes wonderful dark blue, an exquisite mouth. Yet these tell the least of her charms. It was nameless...I have seen many beautiful women, but none like this Russian...But for me, there was something about his Olga Petrova that was glorious. She was a queen. Instantly I thought of Guinevere, and she was the only woman who ever suited me for Lancelot's queen. I remember once before in my notebook I wrote of a beautiful woman-Lina Cavalieri. I have now seen one infinitely more lovely than the Italian beauty. And it ahs been a privilege for which I shall ever be grateful. Cavalieri made me think of love, passion, sensuality, music-the great motives of life. Petrova did more and better for me than that. Somehow she filled an aching void in my heart, a chamber that had forever been unsatisfied. It must be love of the beautiful. I have been satisfied. I have looked at what I think the noblest perfection of nature, -and I am thrilled, silenced, abashed. I wondered who had kissed the Italian; I did not think of any lover for this flower-faced Russian. It seemed to me...that the idea would be presumptuous. I cannot imagine the heaven there would be for the man she loved. Yet I know it would be so."
