Notes	"The sea gloomed a deep dark blue. Broken clouds covered the sky. In the west a storm had centered, half obscuring the sun behind purple and silver-rimmed clouds. Those directly above were gold and mauve. From the far canopy to the west a black pall of rain descended. And out of this broken cloud mass, dense and inky in the center, broke shafts of golden light that blazed down upon the sea. The dark and stormy atmosphere lurid and red in places low down, lost its sinister aspect toward the zenith. A rainbow appeared to arch over the ship and drop its far end beyond the atoll in the lagoon, producing a glamour too unread, to appalling lovingly fro credulity. But there it was, the atoll, the rainbow, the magnificence of cloud shapes and hues and the glorious sea. The sunset flush reddened the crawling surf, and painted the groves of coconut palms, and the bare outcropping coral, the beaches of lucent sand, and made of the lagoon a sapphire that mirrored the heavens. All these lovely aspects heightened in transformations so delicate and exquisite that Donald felt that he was sailing in a dream. But he saw a white sail of a schooner inside the only break in the reef, a swift channel, seething and curling with rose-tinged rough water, like the rapid of a river. Tikehou was no dream."
