Notes	"Zane Grey indisputable has great narrative power. He displays rare ability in projecting action and color into his pictures. To the more sober-minded, whose tastes have been formulated by the traditional realists, his work is characterized as sensational melodrama, improbable as the plots of Elizabethan dramatists. yet on one would think of rejecting the Elizabethan dramatists for either reason. By the same token, Zane Grey's work should be accepted for what it is. His stories are molded on the grand scale Their setting may be the limitless wastes of deserts of enchantment, the lone prairie, the pine forest-highlighted always by the magic of sunrise and sunset. His characters are idealized types-cowboys, ranchers, rangers, and their true women fold. They are heroic figures greater than life size. They are engaged in the normal pursuits of the range, and also in life and death struggles with enemies and the elements alike, indeadly feuds, in wild pursuits, and hair-breadth escapes. The stories move on the grand scale. They have a quality of speed and action suited to the accelerated speed of modern travel."
