Notes	…the grand scene five hundred thousand years hence. The canyon yawned there black and dark under a pale and falling sun. The wide v-shaped gap was open as it had been in the beginnings of time, after the great inland water had cut its tortured way to the sea. On the canyon walls colossal scars showed the action of a recent glacial period. Far up the canyon gleamed the pale green teeth of the retreating ice, sinister and deadly, yielding only to another age. Below foamed and thundered the rapacious river, augmented to its old volume, no longer red but dirty white, remorseless and eternal. Life had failed on the earth. Inscrutable nature had gone on with its work, patient, terrible and endless. A mournful wind swept across the gaunt desert, down the naked halls and shingles, across the barren flats. But the earth, with its long past age of creation, its dreamers and builders who had passed on, was only a tiny globe in the universe. Other planets were evolving. And that divine thing felt by Lynn in his vision had no beginning and no end. The spirit moved ever toward perfection and immortality.
