Notes	George Washington, Frontiersman - length: 120,000 (very long) …The next point we considered was the constant, sometimes day to day following of young Washington's journals. This seems to halt the pace of the story and take away considerably from its effectiveness as fiction. Our feeling is that the overall effect of the story as it now stands - the effect on the ultimate reader - would be that Zane Grey did not write the greater part of it. The style, and some of it is well written, is not that of Zane Grey. There is also the handling of whole episodes that is unlike Zane's treatment. For instance it is hard to believe that Zane would have written an account of an Indian attack in such a stilted, lifeless fashion...I fear that Zane's following of younger readers, which has been kept alive and loyal for two generations, would not accept him as the author of the story. In going over the manuscript for a third time, it seems to me that the main difficulty is the lack of plot. There is very little more intrinsic plot in this manuscript than there must have been in the original diary entries and considerably less flavor and color. We have considered the possibility - to which I hardly think you would agree - of cutting the manuscript to 70,000 words, and to publish it frankly as a juvenile for younger readers. Is my memory correct in thinking that Zane Grey originally called the story Young George Washington and that he had in mind a juvenile? It is obvious that the re-writing shows a perfectly creditable desire on the part of the re-writer to make this story a full-dress, full-length, historical novel. The basic materials, however, for such an ambitious structure were not there. Suggest possibly making a movie script of it or title it as a collaboration.
