Notes	"Almira, Washington. We are right in your own DESERT OF WHEAT tonight in a small town tucked away in the tremendous rolling leagues of wheat country. Getting into this country brought back vividly our visit of four or five years ago and the writing of that book. It's almost like revisiting a shrine for me. We passed through the little town where we had lunch that day." (page 73 - 5 Jul, 1921); "On and on we traveled this day through the leagues on leagues of rolling, swelling wheat fields and the fallow sections of the newly cultivated acres. And wherever the wheat failed there was desert of gray pungent sage as far as the eye could see. Then against the wheat would take hold where man had wrested the land from the desert. And suddenly, after hours of this monotony of which one never tired, we came to a green gash in the earth where the Columbia, here a desert view, had cut its green way down through the black and grey rocks and formed a canyon of palisades and mesas with all the desert's mystery and grandeurs..."
