Notes	"1888 March. Miss Ella Watson appeared in Sweetwater Valley-filed a small homestead claim. 'She was a large, brunette, frowzily good-looking woman of a boat twenty-seven years with a sleepy brown eye which veiled more intelligence and resolution than her outward appearance suggested.' Jim Averill. SHe was in love with him." (page 136); "Through a typical fancy of her kind she had recently honored a solider admirer by changing her name to Kate Maxwell. SHe could hardly hope to decieve the neighborhood since everyone except the newest arrivals knew her personally as a minor celebrity in near-by red light districts. But it accepted the improvisation humorously as her symbol of an intention to become a changed woman. Indeed satirical tribute to her aim of attaining respectability through the cattle traffic, the country side speedily nicknamed her Cattle Kate." (page 139); "So cows rolled in and out of Kate's corral without molestation. SHe was careful about it and did not encourage the appearance of excessive affluence. There were rarely as many there for two weeks in succession. Every few evenings, a quiet little round-up would be held and the Kate Maxwell brand affixed to the small herd of mavericks. THen in the dead of night they would be driven toward the nearest shipping point or to one of the ranches where they chould be kept in seclusion until a discreet sale could be effected." (page 140);
