Notes	"My line of vision took in a broad belt of golden sky against which these dragons of the air limned in distinct silhouette. The rapid flutter of their long slender wings could be plainly discerned. They were feeding on the gnats, mosquitoes, and the tiny insects. For the most part their motion had a regularity that presupposed lanes of passage in the air, at certain points of which they wheeled with sudden velocity to right or left, up or down, pausing an infinitesimal fraction of time, which was the instant of tragedy when something endowed with life perished that another life might go on. And I became absorbed in the speed, ferocity, dexterity of these dragon flies. They were living airplanes of destruction. Nature had marvelously endowed and developed them to keep the air clean and sweet, to prevent insect life from dominating the earth. No doubt of all the organs of these miniature eagles of the dusk that of sight was most incredible and extraordinary. Darting with almost the speed of a bullet the dragonfly could see a pin-point of a gnat a yard or more to one side or above, and would alter its flight and accelerate its speed to make an instantaneous capture. The background for these insatiable hunters was the golden glory of sunset, and the mellow sound of the sea. Inextricably mingled with nature and life was death. The watcher will always me with this triangle."
